A Mad Man, a Sad Man, and a Glad Man


  1. Paul was a MAD man: Acts 26:9-11 (cf. Acts 22:19)

    2. Acts 9:1-2 (Acts 9:13) Saul breathed THREATENINGS and SLAUGHTER against God's children.
    3. Galatians 1:23 Concerning the faith, Paul was once a PERSECUTOR and DESTROYER
    4. 1 Timothy 1:13 Paul was a BLASPHEMER and an INSOLENT man
    5. Our world rushes headlong to damnation in a mad chase for worldly pleasure: Ephesians 2:2-3; Titus 3:3


  2. Paul was a SAD man
    1. 2 Cor 7:10 Godly sorrow produces REPENTANCE
    2. Acts 9:9, 11 Paul FASTED & PRAYED for 3 days.
    3. Jonah 3- the Ninevites REPENTED with FASTING, SACKCLOTH, and ASHES
    4. Matthew 5:3 "Blessed are the POOR in SPIRIT, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
    5. Matthew 5:4 "Blessed are they that MOURN, for they shall be COMFORTED."




  1. Paul was a GLAD man: Acts 9:18-29
    1. Forgiveness of sins always brings great rejoicing:
      1. Acts 2:46-47
      2. Acts 8:39
    2. Romans 5:1-2 "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God."
    3. Psalm 51:12 "Restore unto me the JOY of Thy salvation."
      1. After he had been PURGED- 51:7a
      2. After he had been WASHED- 51:2a, 7b
      3. After he had been CLEANSED- 51:2b, 10a
      4. After he had been RENEWED- 51:10b
    4. Revelation 1:5 We are washed from our sins by the BLOOD of CHRIST
    5. Paul knew of rejoicing- over 30 times in his writings some form of the word "rejoice" appears- 8 times in Philippians, concluding the book with this thought- "Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say, rejoice" (4:4).
