The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit

 

1.   The Gift of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:38

      a.   Miraculous

            i.   The context implies the miraculous, for this is the only experience the audience would have had concerning the H.S.

                  (1) Acts 2:1-13

                        (a) the sound from heaven – v 2

                        (b) the speaking in unlearned languages – vv 4 - 6

                        (c) the skeptics charge – v 13

                  (2) Acts 2:14-21

                        (a) the explanation of prophecy – v 16

                        (b) the expectation of miracles – vv 17 - 18

                        (c) the evidence of signs – vv 19 - 20

            ii.  The Holy Spirit is not identified as being received until after the apostles laid hands on baptized believers:

                  (1) Acts 8:14-18

                  (2) Acts 19:5-6

      b.   Non-miraculous indwelling

            i.   No miracles recorded by a non-apostle until Acts 6:8

                  (1) Acts 2:43 – wonders and signs done by the apostles

                  (2) Acts 3:1-12 – the healing of the lame man (cf 4:16)

                  (3) Acts 5:32 – the Spirit given to all them that obey Him

            ii.  The gift of the Holy Spirit promise to everyone who answers the call of God – Acts 2:39.

 

2.   The Holy Spirit Does Indwell the Faithful Christian

      a.   God the Father indwells His children = the church:

            i.   2 Corinthians 6:16 - 7:1

            ii.  1 John 4:12-16

      b.   God the Son indwells the faithful:

            i.   Romans 8:8-11

            ii.  2 Corinthians 13:5

            iii. Colossians 1:27

      c.   God the Holy Spirit indwells the Christian individually:

            i.   Ephesians 1:12-14

            ii.  2 Corinthians 1:21-22

      d.   Note the connection between the indwelling of the Spirit & the indwelling of Christ:

            i.   Ephesians 3:14-18

            ii.  1 John 3:24
