Philippians 3:13-14 Guidelines for Spiritual Growth

1. Dissatisfaction with the present. v 13a

a. Even Paul realized there were other things to accomplish

i. Romans 15:24-28 -- Paul desired to go to Spain

ii. Philippians 1:21-26

b. When I think, "I have arrived," I have ended any chance of spiritual growth. God

can't even help me!

i. Galatians 6:3; 1 Corinthians 10:12

ii. Luke 18:9-14

c. The same can be said of congregations - Revelation 3:14-19

d. This church may be doing all we can do, but we are not even close doing all we

can do.

e. Why? Because each member is not going all he or she can!

f. The lives of some are an embarrassment to faithful Christians and a

disgrace to the Lord.

g. Many do not study the Bible at home.

h. Many do not pray as they ought.

i. Many have absolutely no interest in evangelism.

j. Many are not giving, as they ought.

 

2. Singularity of purpose - v 13b

a. Need for concentration.

b. James 1:5

c. Matthew 6:33

d. Revelation 2:1-5 forgetting the first works

e. Luke 10:38-42 -- Mary, Martha, and the better part.

f. Jeremiah 29:13; Jeremiah 3:10; Psalm 119:2

 

3. Forget the past - v 13c

a. Forget the sins… God has! (Per obedience to the word)

i. Hebrews 10:16-17

ii. Psalm 103:12

b. The sins of others.

i. Luke 17:103; Matthew 18:15-20

ii. 2 Corinthians 2:7-8, 11

c. Forget past glories. (1Corinthians 3:6-7)

 

4. Press forward - v 13d

i. 1 Corinthians 15:58

ii. Keep your eye on the goal. - v 14 (cf Hebrews 12:1-2)
