- Joshua is the first of 12 books of history that cover 1000 years of Jewish history.
- The book covers about 50 years. During this period, Israel exists under 3 separate systems of government:
- Theocracy - God ruled — Exodus 20 - 1 Samuel 8
- Monarchy - rule of human kings:
- As one nation 1 Samuel 9 - 1 Kings 12
- Israel (10 Northern tribes) 1 Kings 12 - 2 Kings 17
- Judah (2 Southern tribes) 1 Kings 12 - 2 Kings 24
- Captivity - rule of foreign kings — 2 Kings 24 - Acts 2
- During this period also lived the prophets.
- The book of Joshua ushers in the promise and prophecy given by God to Abraham in Genesis 15:13-16
