Enmities and Strife -- ASV


  1. Hatred:
    1. From the Greek ekthra, appears 6 times in the New Testament
      1. trans. "enmity" in Lk 23:12; Rom 8:7; Eph 2:15-16; Jam 4:4
      2. Here, more accurately "enmities" as this usage is plural.
    2. Used to describe hostility between men:
      1. Luke 23:12 -- Herod and Pilate
      2. Ephesians 2:15-16 -- Jew and Gentile
    3. Hostility between men and God
      1. Romans 8:7 -- the CARNAL mind opposes God
        1. Romans 8:6
        2. Colossians 3:1-7
      2. James 4:4 -- the WORLDLY mind is against God (lit., "friendship with the world is hatred of God"
        1. Matthew 6:24
        1. 1 John 2:15-17






  1. Variance:
    1. From the Greek eris, appears 9 times in the New Testament (not the same word rendered variance in Matthew 10:35)
      1. Translated "strife" in:
        1. Romans 13:13 -- we have more important things to do
        2. 1 Corinthians 3:3 -- 'ya ya-in'
        3. Philippians 1:15 -- trying to add to Paul's afflictions
        4. 1 Timothy 6:4 -- useless arguments
      2. Translated "debate" in Romans 1:29 (a list of characteristics of a reprobate mind)
      3. Translated "contentions" in:
        1. 1 Corinthians 1:11 -- prideful religious division
        2. Titus 3:9 -- division over unimportant religious issues
        3. not the same word as "contend" in Jude 3
