- From the Greek ekthra, appears 6 times in the New Testament
- trans. "enmity" in Lk 23:12; Rom 8:7; Eph 2:15-16; Jam 4:4
- Here, more accurately "enmities" as this usage is plural.
- Used to describe hostility between men:
- Luke 23:12 -- Herod and Pilate
- Ephesians 2:15-16 -- Jew and Gentile
- Hostility between men and God
- Romans 8:7 -- the CARNAL mind opposes God
- Romans 8:6
- Colossians 3:1-7
- James 4:4 -- the WORLDLY mind is against God (lit.,
"friendship with the world is hatred of God"

- Variance:
- From the Greek eris, appears 9 times in the New Testament (not
the same word rendered variance in Matthew 10:35)
- Translated "strife" in:
- Romans 13:13 -- we have more important things to do
- 1 Corinthians 3:3 -- 'ya ya-in'
- Philippians 1:15 -- trying to add to Paul's afflictions
- 1 Timothy 6:4 -- useless arguments
- Translated "debate" in Romans 1:29 (a list of characteristics
of a reprobate mind)
- Translated "contentions" in:
- 1 Corinthians 1:11 -- prideful religious division
- Titus 3:9 -- division over unimportant religious issues
- not the same word as "contend" in Jude 3
