Fruit of the Spirit – Longsuffering

 

1.   Longsuffering

      a.   From the Greek compound makrothumia

            i.   Makros - large, long, distant

            ii.  Thumos - wrath

            iii. Literally, “to put one’s wrath at a distance”

            iv. 14 times in the NT: “longsuffering” (12), “patience” (2)

      b.   1 Timothy 1:16

      c.   1 Peter 3:20

      d.   2 Peter 3:10, 15

      e.   James 5:10-11

      f.   Romans 2:3-6

 

2.   Let us be longsuffering in our HOMES

      a.   Husbands with wives - 1 Peter 3:7

      b.   Wives with husbands - 1 Peter 3:1-6

      c.   Parents with children - Colossians 3:21; Ephesians 6:4

 

3.   Let us be longsuffering on the JOB

      a.   Colossians 3:22- 4:1

      b.   Philemon & Onesimus

 

4.   Let us be longsuffering in the CHURCH

      a.   Hebrews 13:1

      b.   2 Corinthians 6:1-10 it is a means of showing ourselves as approved ministers of God (v 6)

      c.   Allows us to allow the big picture to unfold - Romans 9:22-33

      d.   Should we then tolerate sin / ungodliness? GOD FORBID!!!
