Works of the Flesh: Revellings and Such Like
1. “Revellings” - from the Greek komos, appears three times in the NT, twice as “revellings” and once as “rioting.”
a. Strong’s - “a nocturnal and riotous procession of half drunken and frolicsome fellows who after supper parade through the streets with torches and music in honour of Bacchus or some other deity, and sing and play before houses of male and female friends; hence used generally of feasts and drinking parties that are protracted till late at night and indulge in revelry.”
b. Also might be known by the company it keeps:
i. Galatians 5:21 - it appears alongside drunkenness
ii. 1 Peter 4:3 - it appears alongside:
(1) excess of wine, a.k.a. drunkenness
(2) banquetings (drinking parties - NKJV)
(3) abominable idolatries:
(a) abominable: illicit, contrary to law and justice
(b) idolatries: vices springing from idolatry
iii. Romans 13:13: it appears alongside:
(1) drunkenness
(2) chambering = lewdness, sexual misconduct
(3) wantonness = lasciviousness, unbridled lusts, excess, insolence, shamelessness.
c. “Commotion” - a level of civil unrest or insurrection
2. “Such like” - from the Greek toutois homoios
a. toutois - these, these things
b. homoios - like, similar, resembling, corresponding to
c. A catch all phrase which includes anything that is akin or corresponds to the things found among the works of the flesh or is of the same nature.
d. Romans 1:28-32
e. 1 Timothy 5:22 - “do not be a partaker of other men’s sins, keep thyself pure”
f. 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22 “Prove (put to the test) all things, hold fast that which is good. Abstain from every form of evil.”
